State puts federal marriage law on trial

Massachusetts State Attorney General Martha Coakley says the federal Defense of Marriage Act interferes with the right of Massachusetts to define marriage as it sees fit.<br /><br />The state, the first to legalize gay marriage, sued the U.S. government Wednesday over the Defense of Marriage Act.

The law interferes with the right of statesto define and regulate marriage.
